Learning Objectives
The overall aim for the Practitioner Trainings is for participants to be able to understand and use best practices in designing and delivering a sanitation marketing strategy adapted to local market conditions. Specific learning objectives for the sessions include enabling participants to:
- Understand the sanitation marketing approach and how sanitation marketing compares and complements other sanitation approaches, including CLTS.
- Identify the key phases, activities, resources and strategic decisions needed to plan, design and implement a sanitation marketing strategy and program.
- Understand how demand and supply market research is used to identify appropriate market segments and develop a basic sanitation marketing strategy.
- Practice using basic steps and tools for product and business model design and testing.
- Articulate specific opportunities and challenges for different actors (private businesses, government officials, community leaders, program staff) in the development of sanitation markets.
- Use field-tested tools and tactics to train and interact with key market players, including enterprises and local government officials.
- Understand the strengths and limitations of pro-poor consumer financing options for sanitation in a market context.
Training Methods and Activities
All Practitioner Trainings are co-facilitated by experienced global Sanitation Marketing specialists, along side guest presenters from local organisations engaged in mature sanitation marketing programs. Sessions use a peer-to-peer learning approach and emphasise practical lessons and skills. The trainings include a mix of classroom-based sessions and practical exposure/site visits. Key activities include:
- Facilitated sessions on sanitation marketing theory and practice
- Guided site visits to sanitation enterprises and exposure to village-level activities and consumers
- Case studies and problem-based learning exercises evaluating what works and does not work in different market contexts
- Practice use of sanitation marketing design and implementation tools, including sanitation product costing tools, business model development tools, logical framework template, sample M&E indicators, and program checklists
Each of the three trainings follow a similar core curriculum, but are tailored to specific local conditions and draw on available local and regional expertise and experience. Participants will receive a Training Certificate upon completion of the course.
